Where to Find the Rarest Citroen Models Still in Existence

The car manufacturer Citroen has been in action for almost one hundred years, producing some iconic vehicles throughout the 20^th and early 21^st century. Nowadays it may be best known for its range of modern hatchback and family vehicles that offer quality and affordability, but in the past it has created some revolutionary motors.

While many of these can no longer be found, there are some historic and rare used Citroen models still in existence. A few are for sale while others are too rare and valuable to be owned by many people. But if you’re after a rare used Citroen, here are a few good places to start looking.

Motor Museums

The first place to go in an effort to discover some of the rarest Citroen models is unsurprisingly just north of Paris. Here, in a corner of the C3 factory at Aulnay-sous-Bois, is the Conservatoire, an area full of almost every used Citroen model in existence. None of the vehicles are for sale but you can arrange a tour to see everything from a used C1 to many of the old presidential cars.

It’s not the only museum in France that houses some rare Citroen cars. Reims Champagne Automobile Museum is managed by various car collectors and includes many vehicles of which only a handful were ever produced, such as the odd Citroen from 1919, the brand’s first year in production.      

Private Collectors

It can be easy to find a used C2 or second hand C4 online, what’s harder is discovering a Citroen from two or more decades ago. There are many private car collectors who will be sitting on some incredibly rare models, occasionally putting one on sale, usually at a classic car auction or taking to car shows.

Recently one seller took his rare 1976 Citroen Super Ami to the NEC Classic Motor Show to compete against others for the ‘Pride and Joy’ prize. There is always the odd instance of someone putting a 30, 40 or even 50-year-old used Citroen for sale online, which usually gains a bit of press exposure.   

How Citroen Vehicles Increase in Value

Most new cars depreciate in value from the moment they are bought. In order to profit from a used Citroen, it will need to meet certain criteria, usually being over 20 years old, being a rare model still in existence and one that is desirable to buyers. This can be hard to predict when buying a used Berlingo or second hand C4 in the modern age, for example.

While buying and keeping one in good condition could see its value eventually rise, it can be hard to say for many common models as there are so many in production today and it is hard to predict which will be desirable in the future. Still, buying a used Citroen could be a great future investment that will pay off over the years.
