Robins & Day Driver Knowledge Challenge

Robins & Day have carried out research, and discovered that drivers were mainly unaware about car batteries, tread depth and windscreen wipers, which could have lead to problems when out on the road. This lack of basic caar maintenence knowledge could be costing drivers.

The study identified that 62% failed to identify the legal minimum tread depth, 38% could not recognise cable colours for jump starting the car and a shocking 37% opted for only changing windscreen wipers every two years, even if vision became blurry beforehand. Elsewhere, 18% of drivers were unable to locate where to check the coolant level and a further 9% believed ABS stood for Accelerator Brake System.

Following these results, Robns & Day decided to put two young drivers to an ultimate test, with a series of car related tasks, in an attempt to judge them on their automotive knowledge. The challenge included:

  • Checking the oil
  • Pointing out illegal tread depth
  • Answering theory related questions

The second part of the driving experiment involved a ‘vox pop’ styled approach in which members of the public were asked three different questions around car maintenance, these questions included:

  • How does a car engine works?
  • How often should you check your car’s oil?
  • What is a carburretor?

The results may surprise you...
