New Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Revealed

10 May 2017

The New Citroën C5 Aircross was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show in late April, giving visitors a first look at the exciting new SUV. At the same show two years earlier the initial concept for the Aircross was revealed, and the high-riding style that was present then remains extremely similar for this next generation SUV.

As the SUV market grows ever more competitive, with the likes of the New Peugeot 3008 SUV and the DS 7 Crossback coming soon, the New Citroën C5 Aircross has its work cut out if it wants to make a good impression. Based on its first impression and features announced, it looks well prepared to do so.

The Most Powerful Citroën

China will be the first place the New Citroën C5 Aircross goes on sale, with two petrol options set to be released initially. These will feature a 165bhp 1.6 litre and 200bhp 2.0 litre engine, both with EAT6 automatic gearboxes.

What is truly impressive and set to be the most powerful Citroën model so far, will be the plug-in hybrid version with four-wheel drive. A total output of 300bhp (a combination of 200bhp from the petrol-powered engine and the rest from a pair of electric motors) ensures this. Plus, it is claimed to cover up to 60km (about 37 miles) on electric charge alone.

In order to provide as comfortable a journey as possible, Citroën’s Grip Control traction system is in place, assigning power to whichever of the front wheels need it most. New progressive hydraulic cushions replace the old hydropneumatic suspension system too, while two hydraulic stops for rebound and compression supposedly creates a ‘flying carpet’ effect, so it feels like you’re gliding over bumps and dips in the road.

New Style and Features

Similar to the C4 Cactus, but without its unique airbumps, the New Citroën C5 Aircross has a more simplistic yet sharp aesthetic. A large front bumper, full-width chevron grille motif and aggressive headlights form an imposing presence. The silver trim and plastic side skirts add some nice details, as does the ‘floating’ roof which provides 360° windows.

Inside the cabin it’s a similar story to the majority of new Citroën cars. Two high-definition digital displays are present; one an eight-inch touchscreen for sat nav and entertainment purposes, another a 12.3-inch screen that replaces traditional analogue dials. More luxurious trim levels will include heated seats, massage functions and stitched leather seats for that extra exclusivity.

The New Citroën C5 Aircross is due to go on sale in China later this autumn, before coming to the UK sometime between mid and late 2018. No prices have been confirmed yet, but it is expected to cost between £22,000 and £30,000 brand new, depending on the exact specification.
